The opening gala-concert of the XIII Winter International Arts Festival in Sochi, which will take part on February 13 in the Winter Theatre of the famous Russian resort, can be called the parade of premieres.
This night the public will be presented with the concerto for flute and orchestra by one of the leaders of contemporary minimalism, winner of the Golden Globe, César, and other prestigious movie awards, the legendary composer Michael Nyman. This year the maestro celebrates his 75th jubilee. The concerto will be performed by one of the leading world flutists, an old friend and guest of maestro Bashmet’s festivals Massimo Mercelli.
The years of the festival’s activity have built up its traditions and multicultural ties, and therefore we are anticipating another world premiere. One of the leading Russian composers of the new generation, winner of numerous awards, associate professor of Moscow Conservatory Kuzma Bodrov and his Chinese colleague Wang Zhiyi will present a piece for a traditional Chinese voice and an orchestra.
There will also be performed another piece by Kuzma Bodrov for viola and orchestra, which is a result of many years of friendship and joint work of the composer with the distinguished maestro. Ksenia Bashmet will perform the Symphonic rhapsody for piano and strings by the Argentine composer Joaquín Turina – an impressive opus which has barely been performed on Russian stages.
The aria of Princess-Swan by Rimsky-Korsakov, which inspired Vrubel, and arias of Iolanta by Tchaikovsky will be performed by the Bolshoi Theatre artist, grand-prix laureate of the prestige Francisco Viñas International Singing Competition in Barcelona Olga Kulchinskaya. The expressive concert pieces full of lyrical French charm (Chausson’s Poéme and Saint-Saëns’s Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso) will be performed by the German violin player of Korean descent, the XV International Tchaikovsky Competition laureate Clara Jumi Kang.
In the first part, Yuri Bashmet will conduct the Grammy-winning Moscow Soloists chamber orchestra which he founded over thirty years ago; in the second part, maestro Bashmet will introduce the public to his main project of the recent years – the All-Russian Youth Symphony Orchestra, which has recently finished its biggest tour across Russian cities.
